The community, one of California's first master-planned communities, was named for its founding developer, the Laguna Niguel Corporation (1959). The name Laguna (Spanish for "lake" or "lagoon") has been a popular choice for area communities due to the long time popularity of the adjacent City of Laguna Beach. The word Niguel was derived from the Indian name Niguili which was the name of a Juaneo Indian village once located on Aliso Creek. The development is a subdivision of a portion of the former Moulton Ranch (1874).
